Ideas for Healthy, Halloween-inspired after school snacks

Okay, we know that no one wants fruit in their trick or treat bag, but we also know the implications of having a sack full of candy, plus parties in school and with friends (and their after school activities) full of HFCS, Red Dye #40 and well, empty calories. So, if you want to give your kids a fun after school snack, here are some FRUITY options that look cute and taste awesome too! Thanks to Terra’s Kitchen for inspiring these ideas!

What’s even better is that you can even have kids help (or not, depending on your stress level, of course!)

Cute candy corn made from fruit

  • White: pear, jicama, banana
  • Orange: cantaloupe, apricot, mango
  • Yellow: pineapple

Directions: Choose one of each color fruit. Cut progressively larger size triangles and thread onto lollipop sticks to look like oversize candy corn. Served chilled.

Now here’s one that may even be easier, and still get some of the “cute” factor for the small, but just a tad bit of “ew”  lovers!

creative kiwi ideas
Kiwi and the “right” pretzels can make some cute spiders!

  • Kiwis
  • Mini pretzels

Directions: Carefully peel kiwi with a vegetable peeler. Cut off a small lengthwise piece (the belly of the spider) so it sits flat on a plate. Break mini pretzels into curved pieces and insert 3 legs on each side.

Carve out little indentations for eyes and serve.

(You might also try raisins or chocolate chips, if you can figure out a way to make them stick!).

Halloween is a fun time of year, but it can also be a time when parents are cringing at the “approved” candy list. I know I am! So, make it cute, fun, and still sweet, with FRUIT!

What are some fruity ideas you have for halloween that won’t get your house egged?
